Stop folders opening when you drag files over them
Quick answer
Turn off Spring-loading in System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control. Or keep it on and drag Spring-loading speed toward Slow, so folders wait longer before opening.
Why it happens
Spring-loading opens a folder when you hold a dragged file over it for a moment, so you can drop the file deeper inside. It's handy, but if you pause while dragging, folders open when you didn't want them to. You can turn it off or give yourself more time.
How to fix it
Open System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, then click Pointer Control.
Turn off Spring-loading to stop folders opening on their own.

Prefer to keep it? Leave it on and drag Spring-loading speed toward Slow. Folders then wait longer before they open.

Drag a file over a folder and pause there to test it.
Still not fixed?
On a trackpad with Force Click, pressing hard while you drag opens a folder at once. Press lightly while dragging if folders open too soon.
If dragging carries on after you lift your finger, check Dragging style in Trackpad Options…. A drag lock keeps holding the file, which makes folders open by surprise.

If things get picked up without you clicking, the mouse button or trackpad may be sticking. Try another mouse, and if the built-in trackpad is at fault, contact Apple Support for a hardware check.
