Your Mac is using the wrong microphone
Quick answer
Open System Settings > Sound > Input and click the microphone you want. Speak and watch the Input level bars move to confirm it's working.
Why it happens
Whenever a new device with a microphone connects, such as AirPods, a headset, a monitor with a webcam or your iPhone, your Mac may switch to it. It doesn't always switch back when you'd like. Some apps also choose their own microphone, separate from the Mac's setting.
How to fix it
Open System Settings, click Sound, and look under Input. Click the microphone you want, for example your MacBook's own microphone.
Sound›Input
Say a few words. The Input level bars should move as you speak. If they stay flat, that microphone isn't picking you up.
In your call or recording app, open its settings and check which microphone it's set to. Some apps keep their own choice and ignore the Mac's.
Still not fixed?
Disconnect or turn off headsets and AirPods you aren't using, so they can't take over the microphone again.
If an app can't hear you from any mic, give it permission in Privacy & Security > Microphone, then quit and reopen the app.
Privacy & Security›Microphone
If your AirPods sound muffled during calls, choose the Mac's built-in microphone in Sound > Input. The AirPods then keep their full sound quality.

If the built-in microphone never moves the level bars in any app, even after a restart, it may be a hardware fault. Contact Apple Support or a repair shop.
