Get your USB headset, DAC or audio interface to show up on your Mac

Quick answer

Plug the device straight into your Mac with no hub, try another port or cable, then pick it in System Settings > Sound under Output and Input.

Why it happens

USB audio gear needs a good data connection and enough power. Hubs, long adapter chains and charge-only cables are common reasons it never appears. Some devices also show up but aren't picked, so your Mac keeps playing through its own speakers.

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the device and plug it straight into a port on your Mac. Leave out any hub or dock for now.

  2. Try a different port, and a different cable if it has a removable one. Some cables only charge and carry no data. If the device has its own power supply, plug that in too.

  3. Open System Settings, click Sound, and look at the list under Output. Click your device to use it for sound.

  4. Using its microphone? Click Input and choose the device there too.

  5. Still missing? Hold Option, open the Apple menu and choose System Information, then click USB. If the device is listed, your Mac can see it.

Still not fixed?

  1. Listed under USB but not in Sound? The device may need its maker's driver or setup software. Check the maker's website for a version that supports your macOS.

  2. Open Audio MIDI Setup from Applications, then Utilities, to see every audio device your Mac knows about and its format settings.

  3. Works in Sound settings but not in one app? Check the app's own audio settings, and make sure the app is allowed under Microphone in Privacy & Security.

  4. Restart your Mac with the device unplugged, then plug it in once you're logged in.

  5. If it doesn't show under USB on any port, try it on another computer. Not seen there either? The device or cable is faulty, so contact its maker. If every USB device fails in one Mac port, contact Apple Support or a repair shop, as the port may need a hardware repair.
