Use High Power Mode for more performance on your Mac

Quick answer

Open System Settings > Battery and choose High Power under Energy Mode. Only some Macs have this option, and on desktop Macs it's in Energy settings.

Why it happens

High Power Mode lets the fans run harder so the chip can keep working at full speed for longer. That helps with long renders, exports and heavy games. It's offered on some MacBook Pro models with Pro or Max chips and on some desktop Macs.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings and click Battery.

  2. Find Energy Mode. If it isn't there, your Mac doesn't offer High Power Mode.

  3. Choose High Power for when your Mac is on the power adapter. If your Mac offers it for battery too, you can pick it there, but the battery will drain faster.

  4. On a desktop Mac, such as a Mac mini, click Energy instead of Battery and choose High Power from Energy Mode.

  5. Expect the fans to get louder when the Mac is busy. That's normal in High Power Mode.

Still not fixed?

  1. No Energy Mode at all? Install the latest update in General > Software Update. If it's still missing, your model doesn't support it.

  2. Not feeling faster? High Power Mode helps with long, heavy jobs. Web browsing and short tasks feel the same. To see what's working the chip hardest, open Activity Monitor and click CPU.

  3. Want longer battery life instead? Choose Low Power from the same Energy Mode menu.

  4. If the fans roar all the time, even when the Mac is idle, or it shuts down under heavy work, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. That can be a cooling or hardware problem.

Questions people ask

Which Macs have High Power Mode?

Some MacBook Pro models with Pro or Max chips, and some desktop Macs. If you see Energy Mode in Battery or Energy settings, yours has it.

Is High Power Mode bad for my Mac?

No. The fans get louder and it uses more power, but your Mac still protects itself from overheating.

Why can't I find High Power Mode on my MacBook?

Only some models have it. If Battery settings show Low Power Mode but no Energy Mode, your Mac doesn't offer High Power.
