Your Mac wakes up on its own
Quick answer
Set Wake for network access to Never in System Settings > Battery > Options, then unplug Bluetooth and USB devices for a night to test.
Why it happens
A sleeping Mac can wake for network requests, such as another device on your Wi-Fi looking for shared files. Bluetooth mice, keyboards and USB hubs can also send a signal that wakes it. Some apps schedule tasks that briefly wake the Mac too.
How to fix it
Open System Settings, click Battery, then click Options at the bottom.
Set Wake for network access to Never, or to Only on Power Adapter if you need network wake-ups while plugged in. Click Done.
Battery›Options…›Wake for network access
On an iMac, Mac mini or Mac Studio there's no Battery page. Open System Settings, click Energy, and turn off Wake for network access there.
Energy›Wake for network access
For one night, unplug USB hubs and turn off Bluetooth mice and keyboards. If the Mac stays asleep, one of them was waking it.
Still not fixed?
Keep anything off the keyboard and trackpad, and remember a Mac laptop wakes when you open the lid. A bag that presses on the lid can do the same.
Quit apps that schedule backups or downloads overnight, or change their schedule in their own settings.
If it still wakes with nothing connected and network wake turned off, contact Apple Support. Tell them roughly when it wakes and what was connected at the time.
Questions people ask
Why does my Mac wake up in the middle of the night?
Usually a network request or a Bluetooth or USB device. Set Wake for network access to Never and unplug devices for a night to find out.
Why does my MacBook wake up in my bag?
Pressure on the lid or keyboard can wake it. Shut the lid fully and keep heavy items off it, or shut the Mac down for long trips.
