Bluetooth device won't pair with your Mac

Quick answer

Put the device in pairing mode and keep it right next to your Mac. In Bluetooth settings, hold the pointer over it under Nearby Devices, click Connect, then accept or type the code if asked.

Why it happens

A Mac can only see a device that's in pairing mode, which most devices leave after a minute or two. Many also connect straight back to the phone or computer they used last, so your Mac never gets a turn. An old, half-finished pairing can block a new one too.

How to fix it

  1. Charge the device or fit fresh batteries. Low power is a common reason pairing quietly fails.

  2. Put it in pairing mode. On most headphones and speakers you hold the power or Bluetooth button until a light flashes, but check the manual for yours.

  3. If it pairs with your phone, turn Bluetooth off on the phone for now so the device doesn't jump back to it.

  4. On the Mac, open System Settings and click Bluetooth. Keep that window open and wait for the device to appear under Nearby Devices. Hold the pointer over it and click Connect.

  5. If the Mac shows a code or asks you to accept, click Accept, or type the code on the keyboard you're pairing and press Return. The device then moves up to My Devices.

Still not fixed?

  1. Device not in the list? Turn it off and on, hold its pairing button until it flashes, and keep the Bluetooth window open while you wait.

  2. If the device is already listed but won't connect, Control-click it in Bluetooth and choose Forget. Then put it in pairing mode and connect it again.

  3. Turn Bluetooth off and back on with the switch at the top of Bluetooth settings, or restart your Mac.

  4. Move closer and away from Wi-Fi routers, microwaves and USB hubs, which can drown out the signal.

  5. Try pairing the device with a phone. If it won't pair with anything, the device is likely faulty and the maker can help. If no device will pair with your Mac at all, contact Apple Support, as the Mac's Bluetooth may need a repair.

Questions people ask

Why can't my Mac find my Bluetooth headphones?

They're probably not in pairing mode, or they've connected back to your phone. Hold the pairing button until the light flashes and turn the phone's Bluetooth off while you pair.

What code do I type when my Mac asks for one?

Type the code your Mac shows on the keyboard you're pairing, then press Return. For headphones and speakers you usually just click Accept.

How do I remove a Bluetooth device from my Mac?

In Bluetooth settings, Control-click the device and choose Forget. You can pair it again later in pairing mode.
