Switch Bluetooth on or off on your Mac
Quick answer
Open System Settings > Bluetooth and click the Bluetooth switch at the top. Control Center has the same switch, one click away.
Why it happens
Bluetooth links wireless keyboards, mice, trackpads, headphones and speakers to your Mac. Turning it off disconnects all of them at once. AirDrop, Handoff and using your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac need Bluetooth too.
How to fix it
If your keyboard, mouse or trackpad is wireless, have a wired one or your MacBook's own keyboard and trackpad ready. Turning Bluetooth off disconnects them.
Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings and click Bluetooth in the sidebar.
Click the Bluetooth switch at the top to turn it off, or on again.

For a quicker way, click Control Center in the menu bar, the icon with two switches, and click Bluetooth.
Still not fixed?
Want a Bluetooth icon in the menu bar? Turn on Bluetooth under Menu Bar Controls in Menu Bar settings.
Menu Bar›Menu Bar Controls›Bluetooth
Only want to stop one device? Leave Bluetooth on and switch that device itself off.
Switch greyed out? A school or work Mac may lock it, so ask whoever manages it. Otherwise restart your Mac and try again.
If Bluetooth won't switch on again after a restart, or it's missing from System Settings, the hardware may need checking. Contact Apple Support or a repair shop.
Questions people ask
