How to turn on your Mac's camera

Quick answer

Open Photo Booth or FaceTime and the camera turns on by itself, with a green light beside it. If another app can't use it, allow that app in Privacy & Security > Camera.

Why it happens

Your Mac's camera has no on or off switch. It starts whenever an app asks for it and stops when the app is done, and the green light next to the camera shows it's in use. Each app also needs your permission before it can use the camera.

How to fix it

  1. Open Photo Booth from the Applications folder, or press Command-Space, type Photo Booth and press Return. You should see yourself straight away, and the green light next to the camera comes on.

  2. FaceTime works too. Open it and your camera picture shows in the window before you call anyone.

  3. If a different app, such as a video call app, can't see your camera, open Privacy & Security, click Camera and turn on the switch next to that app.

  4. Quit that app with Command-Q and open it again. Apps check camera permission when they start.

Still not fixed?

  1. Using a Mac mini, Mac Studio or Mac Pro? These have no built-in camera. Plug in a USB camera, use a display with a camera built in, or use your iPhone as a webcam with Continuity Camera.

  2. On a MacBook, the built-in camera only works with the lid open. If you have other cameras connected, choose the right one in the app's own settings or menus.

  3. If an app says there's no camera, quit every app that might be using it and restart your Mac. On a work or school Mac, the camera may be turned off by whoever manages it.

  4. If Photo Booth still shows a black picture or no camera after a restart, the camera may have a hardware fault. Contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to get it checked.
