Use Night Shift for warmer screen colors at night

Quick answer

Open System Settings, click Displays, then the Night Shift button. Set a Schedule, or turn on Turn On Until Tomorrow to use it right now.

Why it happens

Night Shift moves your screen's colors toward the warm, orange end of the scale in the evening. Many people find that easier on the eyes at night. It runs on a schedule, so if your screen turns orange every evening, a schedule is set.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and click Displays in the sidebar.

  2. Click the Night Shift button near the bottom of the window.

  3. Choose a Schedule: Sunset to Sunrise, Custom for your own times, or Off.

  4. To try it now, turn on Turn On Until Tomorrow. It switches off by itself the next morning.

  5. Drag the Color temperature slider toward More Warm or Less Warm until it feels right, then click Done.

  6. To stop the warm tint completely, set Schedule to Off and turn off Turn On Until Tomorrow.

Still not fixed?

  1. If Sunset to Sunrise doesn't work, your Mac needs to know where you are. Make sure Location Services is on.

  2. If the screen looks yellow all day, that's probably True Tone, which matches the screen to the room's light. Turn it off in Displays if you prefer fixed colors.

  3. If Night Shift is greyed out, turn off mirroring and Reduce White Point, restart, and check you've selected the right display. Some external displays and TVs don't support it.

  4. If the tint is grey or red rather than warm, check Color filters in Accessibility, then Display.

  5. If colors stay odd with all of these off, contact Apple Support. It may be a display problem.
