See a file's size, dates and location on your Mac

Quick answer

Select the file or folder and press Command-I. The Get Info window shows its size, the dates it was created and changed, and where it's stored.

Why it happens

Finder keeps a file's details in one window called Get Info, rather than showing them all in the folder. It works for files, folders, apps and drives. You can open it from the keyboard, the File menu or a Control-click.

How to fix it

  1. Click the file or folder once to select it, in a Finder window or on your desktop.

  2. Press Command-I, or choose File > Get Info in the menu bar. You can also Control-click the item and choose Get Info.

    Finder›File›Get Info

  3. Read the General section. Kind tells you the file type, Size shows how big it is, Where shows the folder it's in, and Created and Modified give the dates.

  4. For a big folder, give it a moment. The size appears once your Mac has finished adding up everything inside.

Still not fixed?

  1. Selected several files and want one total? Hold Control while you open the File menu and choose Get Summary Info. It shows the combined size in one window.

    Finder›File›Get Summary Info

  2. To see every folder's size in a list, switch to list view, choose View > Show View Options and tick Calculate all sizes.

    Finder›View›Show View Options›Calculate all sizes

  3. To keep a file's location in view all the time, choose View > Show Path Bar. The folder path appears at the bottom of every Finder window.

    Finder›View›Show Path Bar

  4. If the Get Info window opens but you can't see the details, click the arrow next to General to open that section.

  5. If Finder freezes or the Get Info window never opens, restart your Mac. If it keeps happening, contact Apple Support.
