Where to find Home, End, Page Up and Page Down on a Mac

Quick answer

Hold fn with the arrow keys: fn-Left is Home, fn-Right is End, fn-Up is Page Up and fn-Down is Page Down. Command-Up and Command-Down jump to the start or end of a document.

Why it happens

MacBooks and most Apple keyboards leave out the Home, End, Page Up and Page Down keys to save space. The same jobs are built into the arrow keys with fn or Command. One surprise for people coming from Windows: on a Mac, Home and End usually scroll the page rather than move the cursor along the line.

How to fix it

  1. For Home and End, hold fn and press the Left or Right arrow. In most apps this scrolls to the very top or bottom of what you're reading.

  2. For Page Up and Page Down, hold fn and press the Up or Down arrow. The view moves one screen at a time.

  3. To move the cursor to the start or end of a document, press Command-Up Arrow or Command-Down Arrow.

  4. To jump to the start or end of the current line, the way Home and End work on a PC, press Command-Left Arrow or Command-Right Arrow. Option with an arrow moves one word at a time.

  5. Add Shift to any of these to select text as you go. Shift-Command-Right, for example, selects to the end of the line.

Still not fixed?

  1. In Safari and most web browsers, Space scrolls down one screen and Shift-Space scrolls back up, which is handy on a laptop.

  2. Plugged in a keyboard with real Home and End keys? They work, but they scroll the page on a Mac. Use Command-Left and Command-Right when you want the cursor to move.

  3. Spreadsheets, Terminal and some games use their own key rules. Check the app's Help menu for its keyboard shortcuts.

  4. If the arrow keys or fn don't respond at all, try another keyboard. If that one works, the original keyboard may need a repair, so contact Apple Support or a repair shop.
