Change the password you use to log in to your Mac
Quick answer
Open System Settings > Touch ID & Password and click Change… next to Password, then type your old password and the new one. On a Mac without Touch ID, the pane is called Login Password.
Why it happens
Your login password protects your account and approves changes on your Mac. You can change it any time, as long as you know the current one. Your keychain, which holds saved passwords, normally switches to the new password at the same time.
How to fix it
Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then click Touch ID & Password in the sidebar. On a Mac without Touch ID, click Login Password instead.
Next to Password, click Change…
Touch ID & Password›Password›Change…
Type your current password, then your new one twice. Add a hint if you'd like a reminder, then click Change Password.
From now on, use the new password to log in and to approve changes. Touch ID keeps working as before.
Still not fixed?
Asked for your keychain password afterwards? Type your old password once. That brings the keychain up to date with your new one.
Wanted to change your Apple Account password instead? That's a separate password, changed in Apple Account settings under Sign-In & Security.

Forgot your current password? This page needs it. On the login screen, after a few wrong tries, your Mac offers ways to reset it, for example with your Apple Account.
On a school or work Mac, password rules may come from your IT team. If your new password is refused, ask them what it needs.
If the Change… button is greyed out, or none of the reset options work, contact Apple Support. Have your proof of purchase ready in case they ask for it.
Questions people ask
Is my Mac password the same as my Apple Account password?
No. Your Mac login password opens your Mac account. Your Apple Account password is for iCloud and the App Store, and is changed separately.
Will changing my Mac password delete anything?
No. Your files, apps and settings stay the same. Your keychain usually updates to the new password too.
