Add, remove and move controls in Control Center on your Mac
Quick answer
Open Control Center from the menu bar, click Edit Controls at the bottom, then drag the controls you want into it. Click Done when it looks right.
Why it happens
Control Center only shows the controls that have been added to it, so a handy one like Keyboard Brightness or Hearing may simply not be there yet. Since macOS 26 you can choose, move and resize the controls yourself. Anything you take out is still available to add back later.
How to fix it
Click the Control Center icon in the menu bar. It looks like two small switches and sits near the clock.
Scroll to the bottom of Control Center and click Edit Controls.
Control Center›Edit Controls
A gallery of controls opens. Pick a group or type a name in Search Controls, such as Hearing or Keyboard Brightness.
Drag the control you want into Control Center. You can drag it onto the menu bar instead if you'd like it there all the time.
To tidy up, drag controls into a new order. Control-click one to change its size or remove it. Click Done when you've finished.
Editing works the same way on macOS 26 and 27. The reset button reads Reset Control Center on macOS 26 and Reset Control Center… on macOS 27.
Still not fixed?
Can't find a control? Some only exist on Macs with the hardware for them. Battery appears on Mac laptops, and Keyboard Brightness needs a backlit keyboard.
For controls you'd rather keep in the menu bar, open System Settings and click Menu Bar. The Menu Bar Controls there show which ones appear at the top of your screen.

If Control Center has got into a muddle, start again. In Menu Bar settings, scroll down and click Reset Control Center. This removes your changes and puts back the standard controls.

macOS 27 Golden Gate Menu Bar›Reset Control Center…
If there's no Edit Controls button, check General, then Software Update. Editing Control Center needs macOS 26 or later.
