Stop your Mac menu bar from hiding at the top of the screen
Quick answer
Open System Settings > Menu Bar and set Automatically hide and show the menu bar to Never. The menu bar stays visible all the time.
Why it happens
Your Mac can hide the menu bar to give apps more room, and then it only slides down when the pointer touches the top edge. That setting may have been turned on by accident or come with a macOS update. The pop-up in Menu Bar settings decides when it hides.
How to fix it
Move the pointer to the very top of the screen so the menu bar slides down, then click the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
Click Menu Bar in the sidebar and find Automatically hide and show the menu bar. Set the pop-up to Never.

Move the pointer away from the top. The menu bar should now stay where it is, even when an app is in full screen.
Want it hidden some of the time? On Desktop Only hides it in normal windows but shows it in full screen, In Full Screen Only does the opposite, and Always hides it everywhere.
Still not fixed?
On macOS 26 and 27 the menu bar can look see-through, so it seems missing against some wallpapers. Turn on Show menu bar background in Menu Bar settings to make it easier to see.

Missing on a second display only? With Displays have separate Spaces turned off, only the main screen shows a menu bar. Turn it on under Mission Control in Desktop & Dock, then log out and back in.

If the menu bar is there but frozen, blank or missing icons, choose Log Out from the Apple menu and log back in, or restart your Mac.
If it still vanishes with the setting on Never, restart your Mac. If the problem keeps coming back after that, contact Apple Support.
