Add a VPN to your Mac in Network settings

Quick answer

Open System Settings > Network, click the Action button with three dots and choose Add VPN Configuration, then your VPN type. Fill in the details you were given and click Create.

Why it happens

Your Mac has a VPN built in for common types such as IKEv2 and L2TP over IPSec. It only needs the server address and sign-in details, which your workplace or VPN provider gives you. Some providers use their own app instead, and that app adds the VPN for you.

How to fix it

  1. Have the details ready: the VPN type, the server address, your account name, and the password, shared secret or certificate.

  2. Open System Settings and click Network. Click the Action button with three dots, choose Add VPN Configuration, then pick the type you were given.

  3. Give the VPN a name you'll recognise, then type the server address, account name and password or other sign-in details exactly as given. Click Create.

  4. Open VPN in the sidebar and turn on the switch next to your new VPN. Once it shows as connected, your traffic goes through it.

Still not fixed?

  1. Won't connect? In VPN settings, click the Info button next to the VPN and check the server address and account name for typos. One wrong letter is enough to fail.

  2. Turn the VPN off and on again. If that doesn't help, remove it and add it again from the start.

  3. Your workplace may have sent a profile file instead of details to type. Open it, then install it in General > Device Management.

  4. Ask your IT team or VPN provider to confirm the VPN type and settings. They can also see why their server turns you away.

  5. If the VPN works on other devices with the same details but never on this Mac, on any network, contact Apple Support.

Questions people ask

Does a Mac have a built-in VPN?

It has a built-in VPN client, not a VPN service. You still need a server and sign-in details from your workplace or a VPN provider.

Where do I put VPN details on a Mac?

In System Settings > Network, click the Action button with three dots and choose Add VPN Configuration. The details go in the form that opens.
