Fix the Weak Security warning on your Mac's Wi-Fi

Quick answer

The warning is about your router, not your Mac. Set the router's Wi-Fi security to WPA3 Personal, or WPA2/WPA3 Transitional if you have older devices, and the warning goes away.

Why it happens

Your Mac checks how each Wi-Fi network is encrypted. Old methods like WEP, WPA and TKIP can be broken, so macOS marks those networks as Weak Security. You can still join, but someone nearby could more easily read what isn't protected in other ways.

How to fix it

  1. Open System Settings > Wi-Fi. Under your network's name you'll see Weak Security. Click the Details button next to it to read the warning.

  2. Open your router's settings. Most routers have an app or a web page, and the address is often on a sticker on the router itself.

  3. Find the wireless security setting and choose WPA3 Personal. If older phones, printers or TVs then can't join, choose WPA2/WPA3 Transitional instead (some routers call it WPA2/WPA3 Mixed; don't pick WPA/WPA2 Mixed). If there's no WPA3, choose WPA2 Personal with AES (not TKIP). Avoid WEP, WPA and TKIP.

  4. Save the change. Your devices drop off for a moment, then join again with the same password. Check Wi-Fi settings on your Mac: the warning should be gone.

Still not fixed?

  1. If your Mac won't rejoin after the change, forget the network and join it again with the password.

  2. Some older devices can't use WPA3 on its own. If one stops connecting, set the router to WPA2/WPA3 Transitional.

  3. If the router offers nothing newer than WPA or WEP, it's too old to protect you well. Ask your internet provider for a newer router, or replace it.

  4. On café or hotel Wi-Fi you can't change the router. Avoid banking or typing passwords there, or use your phone's Personal Hotspot instead.

  5. If the router is already on WPA2 or WPA3 and only your Mac still shows the warning, restart the router and the Mac. If it stays, ask your internet provider to check the router, or contact Apple Support.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to use Wi-Fi that says Weak Security?

For browsing secure websites it's mostly fine, but the network's own encryption is easy to break. Fix the router setting at home, and avoid sensitive tasks on weak public networks.

What security should my Wi-Fi router use?

WPA3 Personal is best. Use WPA2/WPA3 Transitional if some of your devices can't join a WPA3 network, or WPA2 Personal with AES if the router has no WPA3.
