Open Notification Center on your Mac to see past notifications

Quick answer

Click the date and time at the far right of the menu bar. Notification Center slides in from the right, with your recent notifications and widgets.

Why it happens

Notification Center doesn't have its own icon in the menu bar, so it's easy to lose. It's tucked behind the clock instead. Notifications you haven't cleared wait there, grouped by app, even ones that arrived while a Focus was on.

How to fix it

  1. Click the date and time in the top-right corner of your screen. Notification Center opens down the right side.

  2. Or press Fn-N on the keyboard. On newer keyboards the Fn key has a globe on it, so it's Globe-N.

  3. On a trackpad you can also swipe left with two fingers from the right edge. If that doesn't work, turn on Notification Center in Trackpad settings under More Gestures.

    Trackpad›More Gestures›Notification Center

  4. Click a stack of notifications to expand it and see older ones from the same app. Click the date and time again, or anywhere outside the panel, to close it.

Still not fixed?

  1. If one app's notifications never show up, open Notifications in System Settings, click the app and check Allow notifications is on.

    Notifications›your app›Allow notifications

  2. Notifications you've cleared are gone for good. Notification Center only keeps the ones you haven't dismissed, so old ones may be missing if you cleared them.

  3. If a Focus such as Do Not Disturb is on, notifications arrive silently. Open Control Center in the menu bar and click Focus to see or turn it off.

  4. If clicking the clock does nothing, restart your Mac from the Apple menu and try again. If Notification Center still won't open, contact Apple Support.
