Share your Mac's music and films with other devices at home

Last checked: 20 Oct 2026 · macOS 26 & 27 · Source: Apple Support

Quick answer

Open System Settings > General > Sharing and turn on Media Sharing. Click the info button next to it to choose Home Sharing, sharing with guests, or both.

Why it happens

Media Sharing lets other devices on your home network play the music and films in your Mac's Music and TV apps. Home Sharing is for your own devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Share media with guests lets other people on your network browse your library too, with a password if you like.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, click General, then Sharing.

  2. Turn on Media Sharing, then click the info button next to it.

  3. Turn on Home Sharing and sign in with your Apple Account to share with your own devices. To let others on your network play your library, turn on Share media with guests.

  4. Click Options… if you want to share only some playlists or ask guests for a password. Click OK, then Done.

  5. Keep your Mac on and awake while others are playing from it.

Still not fixed?

  1. On Apple TV, sign in to Home Sharing in its Settings with the same Apple Account, then open the Computers app to find your library.

  2. Library not showing up? Check both devices are on the same home network and your Mac isn't asleep. On a MacBook, Wake for network access in Battery options helps; on a desktop Mac it's in Energy.

  3. Restart your router and your Mac, then try again. Home networks sometimes stop passing these connections until they restart.

  4. If other devices still never see your Mac, contact Apple Support. They can check your Apple Account and network setup with you.
