See how much RAM your Mac has and which chip is inside

Quick answer

Choose Apple menu, then About This Mac. You'll see the Chip (or Processor on an Intel Mac) and the Memory, which is your RAM.

Why it happens

About This Mac gives a one-glance summary of your Mac: model, chip, memory, serial number and macOS version. Memory (RAM) is what open apps use, and it's different from storage, which holds your files. On Macs with Apple silicon, the memory and graphics are built into the chip.

How to fix it

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and choose About This Mac.

    Apple menu›About This Mac

  2. Read the Chip line, such as Apple M3, or Processor on an Intel Mac. The Memory line shows your RAM, for example 16 GB.

  3. On an Intel Mac, the Graphics line shows the graphics chip. On Apple silicon, graphics are part of the chip.

  4. For full details, click More Info, then System Report at the bottom of the About settings.

    General›About›System Report…

  5. To see storage instead of memory, open Storage settings. It shows how much space is used and free.

Still not fixed?

  1. To see whether your RAM is enough, open Activity Monitor and click Memory. Green Memory Pressure means you have plenty, yellow or red means your Mac is short.

  2. For the number of graphics cores, look under Graphics/Displays in System Report.

  3. On Apple silicon, memory can't be added or swapped later, so the amount you see is what your Mac has for good.

  4. If About This Mac shows less memory than your receipt, contact the seller, or Apple Support if you bought it from Apple. On older Intel Macs with memory slots, a missing amount usually means a faulty or loose memory module, which a repair shop can check.
