Make the menu bar and its icons bigger on your Mac

Quick answer

Open System Settings > Accessibility > Display and set Menu bar size to Large. Log out and back in to see the bigger menu bar.

Why it happens

The menu bar is drawn at a standard size that suits most screens, but on a high-resolution display it can look tiny. Your Mac has a separate setting just for the menu bar, so you can make it bigger without changing anything else. It only takes effect after you log in again.

How to fix it

  1. Click the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar and choose Display.

  2. Find Menu bar size and change it from Default to Large.

  3. Save any open work, then choose Log Out from the Apple menu and log back in. The menu bar, its words and its icons are now larger.

Still not fixed?

  1. Want text bigger in apps too? Open Text size on the same Display page and drag the slider. It works in apps that support it, such as Mail, Messages and Finder.

  2. To make everything on screen bigger at once, open Displays and pick a larger option under Resolution, such as Larger Text. Everything gets bigger, and less fits on the screen.

  3. On a MacBook with a notch at the top of the screen, a bigger menu bar fits fewer icons. If some disappear, hold Command and drag the ones you don't need out of the menu bar.

  4. If the menu bar is still small after logging out and in, restart your Mac and check the setting again. If it still won't change, contact Apple Support.

Questions people ask

Why didn't my menu bar get bigger straight away?

Menu bar size only applies when you log in. Log out from the Apple menu and log back in, and you'll see the larger size.

How do I make the text bigger on my Mac?

Use Text size in Accessibility, then Display, for text in apps. For everything on screen, choose a larger option under Resolution in Displays.
