Fix an App Store download that's stuck or won't install
Quick answer
Restart your Mac, open the App Store and start the download again. If it stalls again, check Apple's System Status page, your payment method and your network.
Why it happens
Downloads usually stall for one of three reasons. Apple's servers may be having a problem, your connection may be dropping, or an unpaid order on your account is blocking new downloads, even free ones. A restart clears a stuck download queue more often than you'd expect.
How to fix it
Save your work, then restart from the Apple menu.
Apple menu›Restart…
Open the App Store, find the app and click its download button again. Leave it alone for a few minutes, as big apps can sit still before they start.

Still stuck? Look up Apple's System Status page in your web browser. If the App Store shows a problem there, wait and try later.
Check your card. In the App Store, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then your name again, then Payment Methods. Update an expired card, because an unpaid order blocks every download.
Try a different network, such as your phone's hotspot, to rule out your Wi-Fi.
Still not fixed?
If it says there isn't enough space, open General, then Storage, and free some room. Large apps need extra space while they install.

Make sure Set time and date automatically is on. A wrong clock can stop secure downloads.
General›Date & Time›Set time and date automatically
Install any waiting macOS update from General, then Software Update. Some apps need a newer macOS before they'll install.

If the download still won't finish, or the App Store mentions a billing problem you can't clear, contact Apple Support.
Questions people ask
Why does my App Store download say Waiting?
The App Store is queued behind another download, can't reach Apple, or is blocked by an unpaid order. Restart the Mac and check your payment method.
Can an unpaid order stop free app downloads?
Yes. Until the unpaid order is settled, the App Store won't download anything, free or paid. Update your card under Payment Methods.
How do I know if the App Store is down?
Check Apple's System Status page in your web browser. If the App Store isn't marked as working normally there, the problem is on Apple's side.
