Download and install apps on your Mac

Quick answer

Open the App Store, search for the app, and click Get or its price. Sign in with your Apple Account if asked, and the app installs into your Applications folder.

Why it happens

The App Store comes with every Mac, and Apple reviews apps before they're listed there. It handles the download, the install and later updates for you. Some apps aren't in the App Store and come from the developer's own website instead.

How to fix it

  1. Open the App Store. It's in the Dock, or press Command-Space, type App Store and press Return.

  2. Click in the search field, type the app's name and press Return.

  3. Click the app to see its details, then click Get for a free app, or the price for a paid one. If the button then changes to Install, click it.

  4. Sign in with your Apple Account if your Mac asks. You may also need to confirm with your password or Touch ID.

  5. Wait for the download to finish, then click Open. You'll find the app in your Applications folder from now on.

Still not fixed?

  1. Download stuck or won't start? Restart your Mac and try again. If it still stalls, check your payment method in your Apple Account, since an unpaid order can block downloads, then try another network.

  2. If the app says it needs a newer macOS, update first in General > Software Update.

  3. Not enough space? Check General > Storage, clear some room, then try the download again.

  4. Can't find the app in the App Store? It may only be on the developer's website. Download it from there, open the downloaded file and drag the app into Applications.

  5. If the App Store won't open, or every download fails with your Apple Account, contact Apple Support. They can check your account and purchases.
