Charge your MacBook to 100% now when it's holding at 80%

Quick answer

Click the battery icon in the menu bar and choose Charge to Full Now. Your Mac skips the 80% pause and charges all the way.

Why it happens

Optimized Battery Charging learns your routine and holds the battery at 80% until shortly before it expects you to unplug. That slows battery ageing, but it gets in the way when your plans change, like an early flight. Charge to Full Now overrides the hold for this charge.

How to fix it

  1. Make sure the charger is plugged in. Charge to Full Now only appears while charging is on hold.

  2. Click the battery icon near the right end of the menu bar and choose Charge to Full Now.

  3. Leave the Mac plugged in. The battery menu stops saying Charging On Hold and the battery fills to 100%.

Still not fixed?

  1. Don't see Charge to Full Now? If you've set a Charge Limit, raise it to 100% instead. Open Battery settings and click the info button next to Charging.

  2. No battery icon in the menu bar? Turn it on in Menu Bar settings, under Menu Bar Controls.

  3. If you'd rather your Mac never holds at 80%, turn off Optimized Battery Charging in the same Charging panel. The battery may age a little faster.

  4. If the battery won't go past 80% with all of these off, or Battery Health says Service Recommended, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The battery or charger may need checking.

Questions people ask

Why is my MacBook stuck at 80%?

Optimized Battery Charging or a Charge Limit is holding it there to protect the battery. Choose Charge to Full Now in the battery menu for a full charge.

Is it bad to charge my MacBook to 100%?

No. Charging to full before a trip is fine. The 80% hold just helps a Mac that's plugged in most of the time.
