Turn Optimized Battery Charging on or off

Why it happens

Optimized Battery Charging learns when you usually unplug your Mac. It holds the charge at about 80% and finishes filling the battery just before you need it, so the battery spends less time at 100%. That slows battery ageing, but it can look like your Mac has stopped charging.

How to fix it

1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and click Battery in the sidebar.

2. Click the info button next to Charging. On older versions of macOS, click the one next to Battery Health.

3. Turn Optimized Battery Charging on to protect the battery, or off to charge to 100% every time. Then click Done.

Still not fixed?

1. Just need a full battery today? Click the battery icon in the menu bar while it says Charging On Hold and choose Charge to Full Now. The setting stays as it was.

2. If it still stops at a set level with Optimized Battery Charging off, check Charge Limit in the same panel and set it to 100%.

3. If your Mac never charges past a certain level with both settings off, even after a restart, contact Apple Support. It may be a battery or charging fault.
