Use Center Stage on your Mac to keep you in frame

Quick answer

While a video app like FaceTime is using the camera, click the Video icon in the menu bar, then click Center Stage. Click it again to turn it off.

Why it happens

Center Stage moves and zooms the picture so you stay in the middle of the frame as you move around. It needs a camera that supports it. Your Mac shows the control in the menu bar only while an app is using the camera.

How to fix it

  1. Open FaceTime or another video app and turn on your camera.

  2. Click the Video icon in the menu bar, at the top right of the screen. It only shows while the camera is in use.

  3. Click Center Stage to turn it on or off. Move around a little to see the picture follow you.

Still not fixed?

  1. Center Stage missing or greyed out? It needs a camera that supports it: a built-in Center Stage camera on newer Macs, Apple's Studio Display, or an iPhone used as your Mac's camera.

  2. If the Video icon doesn't appear in one app, try FaceTime first to check Center Stage works there. Some apps have their own video settings.

  3. Using an iPhone as the camera? Keep it close to the Mac, locked and on a stand, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on.

  4. If Center Stage is on but the picture never moves with a supported camera, restart the Mac. If it still doesn't work, contact Apple Support.
