Make Liquid Glass more solid and easier to read

Quick answer

Open System Settings > Appearance and set Liquid Glass to Tinted. On macOS 27 it's a slider, so drag it to the right for more tint.

Why it happens

Liquid Glass is the see-through look macOS Tahoe uses for menus, sidebars, toolbars and the Dock. With the default Clear look, busy wallpapers and windows behind can show through and make text hard to read. Tinting it gives those surfaces a more solid backing.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings and click Appearance in the sidebar.

  2. Find Liquid Glass. On macOS 26, choose Tinted instead of Clear. On macOS 27, drag the Liquid Glass slider to the right for more tint, or to the left for a clearer look.

  3. Open a menu or a Finder window to check. The change applies straight away.

  4. Still hard to read? Open Accessibility, then Display, and turn on Reduce transparency. Menus and sidebars then become fully solid.

The Clear and Tinted choice arrived in macOS 26.1, so update first if you don't see it on macOS 26. On macOS 27 it's a slider instead of two choices.

Still not fixed?

  1. Can't see Liquid Glass in Appearance on macOS 26? Install the latest update in Software Update.

  2. Only the menu bar is hard to read? Turn on Show menu bar background in Menu Bar settings.

  3. Edges and buttons blend together? Turn on Increase contrast in Accessibility > Display for darker outlines.

  4. On macOS 27, moving the Liquid Glass slider while Reduce transparency is on may switch Reduce transparency off. Check it again after you change the slider.

  5. If text stays hard to read with these settings on, or the screen looks blotchy everywhere, contact Apple Support. Patches on the screen itself point to a display fault.

Questions people ask

How do I turn off Liquid Glass on a Mac?

You can't remove it, but Tinted (or the slider on macOS 27) makes it more solid, and Reduce transparency in Accessibility > Display makes it fully opaque.

Why can't I find the Liquid Glass setting?

It needs macOS 26.1 or later. Update in General > Software Update.
