Tidy up and sort the icons on your Mac desktop

Quick answer

Click an empty part of the desktop, open the View menu in the menu bar and choose Clean Up By, Sort By or Use Stacks. Stacks gather your files into neat piles by kind, and you click a pile to open it.

Why it happens

Icons land wherever a file is saved or dropped, so a busy desktop ends up scattered, overlapping or hidden behind each other. Your Mac only lines them up when you ask it to or when a sort order is set. Stacks are off until you turn them on.

How to fix it

  1. Click once on an empty bit of the desktop so Finder is in charge. You'll see Finder next to the Apple menu at the top left.

  2. Open the View menu. Clean Up By lines the icons up once by name, kind or date. Sort By keeps them in that order from now on. Use Stacks gathers them into piles.

  3. With Stacks on, click a pile to fan it open and click it again to close it. To group the piles a different way, choose View, then Group Stacks By, and pick Kind, Date Added or another option.

    Finder›View›Group Stacks By

  4. For a tidy grid that still lets you drag icons where you like, choose View, then Show View Options, and set Sort By to Snap to Grid. Icon size and Grid spacing in the same window make everything bigger or roomier.

Still not fixed?

  1. If the icons keep rearranging themselves, a sort order is on. Open Show View Options from the View menu and set Sort By to None or Snap to Grid, so your Mac stops moving them.

  2. Control-click an empty part of the desktop for the same choices in a shortcut menu. That's handy when a Finder window is in front and the View menu shows that window's options instead.

  3. If you can't see any icons at all, open System Settings, click Desktop & Dock, and check Show Items has On Desktop turned on.

  4. If the desktop looks wrong after a restart, restart once more and give Finder a minute. You can also choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, pick Finder and click Relaunch.

  5. If the desktop still won't keep its layout after an update and a restart, contact Apple Support. Your Finder settings may need a closer look.
