Your Mac desktop icons disappeared: bring them back
Quick answer
Open System Settings > Desktop & Dock and tick On Desktop next to Show Items. Your files and folders appear on the desktop again straight away.
Why it happens
Your Mac can hide everything on the desktop with one tick box, and it's easy to switch off by accident. Hidden items aren't deleted: they're still in the Desktop folder. The other common reason is iCloud Drive, which can move your Desktop folder into iCloud so the files show up there instead.
How to fix it
Click the Apple menu and choose System Settings, then click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.
Scroll to Desktop & Stage Manager. Next to Show Items, tick On Desktop.
Desktop & Dock›Desktop & Stage Manager›Show Items›On Desktop
Close System Settings and look at your desktop. Your files, folders and drives should be back where they were.
On Desktop sits in the same place on macOS 26 and 27. The wallpaper click setting is called Show Desktop on macOS 26 and Click wallpaper to show desktop on macOS 27.
Still not fixed?
If On Desktop was already ticked, open Finder and press Shift-Command-D to open your Desktop folder. If your files are listed there, the problem is only how the desktop is shown, not missing files.
If Stage Manager is on, tick In Stage Manager next to Show Items as well, or turn Stage Manager off in Control Center.

If the Desktop folder is empty, check iCloud Drive. With Desktop & Documents Folders on, your desktop files live in iCloud Drive and appear under iCloud in the Finder sidebar. If someone turned that option off, the files stay in iCloud Drive, in a Desktop folder there, and you can drag them back.

If your windows slid away when you clicked the wallpaper, click it again to bring them back. To stop that happening, set Show Desktop to Only in Stage Manager. On macOS 27 the setting is called Click wallpaper to show desktop.

Using more than one screen? Desktop icons show only on your main display, so look there. If you used a Terminal tweak to hide desktop icons in the past, the Terminal box below turns them back on.
If the files are in none of these places, check the Trash, then a Time Machine backup if you have one. If files keep vanishing and you can't find them anywhere, contact Apple Support.

Questions people ask
Did hiding desktop icons delete my files?
No. Turning off On Desktop only hides them. Your files stay in the Desktop folder, which you can open in Finder with Shift-Command-D.
Why did my desktop files move to iCloud Drive?
Desktop & Documents Folders in iCloud Drive keeps your Desktop in iCloud. Your files show under iCloud in the Finder sidebar, and on your other devices too.
Why are my desktop icons missing on my second monitor?
Desktop icons appear only on your main display, so they won't show on a second screen. Look on your main display instead.
