Set up a way back into your Apple Account before you need it

Quick answer

Open System Settings, click your name, then Sign-In & Security, click Recovery Contacts and choose Add Recovery Contact. Pick someone you trust.

Why it happens

If you forget your Apple Account password and have no other signed-in device, getting back in can take days. A recovery contact is a person you trust whose Apple device can show you a code that proves it's you. They never see your data, they only help you reset your password. A Recovery Key does the same job as a long code you keep somewhere safe.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings and click your name at the top of the sidebar.

  2. Click Sign-In & Security, then Recovery Contacts.

  3. Click Add Recovery Contact, enter your Mac password if asked, and choose a person from your contacts. A partner, close friend or family member who has an iPhone, iPad or Mac works best.

  4. Your contact gets a message asking them to accept. Once they do, their name shows in the list, and you're covered.

  5. If you'd rather not rely on another person, a Recovery Key on the same page is the other option. Write it down and keep it safe, because with a Recovery Key turned on you'll need that key or one of your signed-in devices to reset your password.

Still not fixed?

  1. No Recovery Contacts option, or it won't let you add one? Two-factor authentication has to be on, and your contact needs an Apple device with a recent software version. Check Two-Factor Authentication on the same page.

  2. While you're there, make sure your trusted phone number is one you still use. That number is how Apple sends codes when you sign in on a new device.

  3. Already locked out? Ask your recovery contact to open their Apple Account settings and find you under their recovery contacts. They read you the code shown there, and you type it where your device asks.

  4. If you're locked out with no recovery contact, no Recovery Key and no signed-in device, contact Apple Support. They can start account recovery, but it can take several days while they check it's really you.

Questions people ask

Can my recovery contact see my iCloud data?

No. A recovery contact only gets a code to help you reset your password. They can't see your photos, messages or anything else in your account.

Should I use a recovery contact or a Recovery Key?

A recovery contact is easier for most people. A Recovery Key gives you more control, but if you lose the key and your devices, you could be locked out.

How do I add a recovery contact on my iPhone?

Open Settings, tap your name, then Sign-In & Security, and look for Account Recovery. The steps match the Mac.
