Make your Mac log in automatically without a password

Quick answer

In System Settings, open Users & Groups and set Automatically log in as to your account, then type your password once to confirm. It's dimmed while FileVault is on.

Why it happens

Every Mac asks for a password at startup unless automatic login is chosen. Automatic login is off by default because anyone who switches the Mac on gets straight into your account. FileVault also needs your password at startup, so the two can't be on together.

How to fix it

  1. Think about who can reach this Mac. Only use automatic login on a Mac at home that nobody else can pick up, because anyone who turns it on gets into your files.

  2. Open System Settings from the Apple menu and click Users & Groups in the sidebar.

  3. Open the Automatically log in as menu and choose your account. Type your Mac login password when asked and confirm.

  4. Restart your Mac to check. It should go straight to your desktop.

Still not fixed?

  1. If the menu is greyed out, FileVault is on. It encrypts your files and needs your password at startup, so it keeps your data safe if the Mac is lost or stolen. It's best to leave it on. You can see its status in Privacy & Security, under FileVault.

  2. Tired of typing the password after sleep rather than at startup? If your Mac or keyboard has Touch ID, it gives you a quicker way in without making the Mac less safe.

  3. On a work or school Mac, the organisation may block automatic login. Ask whoever manages it.

  4. If your choice keeps resetting to Off after a restart and FileVault is off, contact Apple Support.
