Stop your MacBook turning on when you open the lid or plug it in
Quick answer
This is normal on Apple silicon MacBooks, and System Settings has no switch for it. If you're happy to use Terminal, Apple's command in the Terminal section below turns it off.
Why it happens
MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with Apple silicon are built to start up as soon as you open the lid or connect the power adapter, even after a full shut down. It saves you pressing the power button. Apple added a setting for it that only Terminal can change, so there's nothing to find in System Settings.
How to fix it
Check it's this feature. It happens when you lift the lid or plug in the charger on a MacBook that was shut down. If your Mac was only asleep, waking when you open the lid is normal, and this command doesn't change that.
Open Terminal. Press Command-Space, type Terminal and press Return.
Copy the command from the Terminal section below, paste it into Terminal and press Return. When it asks for your Mac login password, type it and press Return. Nothing appears while you type, which is normal.
Shut down your Mac, close the lid, then open it again. It should stay off until you press the power button, which is also the Touch ID button.
Want only one of the two? The note in the Terminal section says which value stops just the lid or just the power adapter from starting it.
Still not fixed?
Changed your mind? Run the undo command from the same section, and your Mac goes back to starting up on its own.
If Terminal won't accept your password, make sure you're logged in to an administrator account, or ask whoever manages your Mac.
These steps are for Apple silicon MacBooks. Older Intel MacBooks behave in a similar way but use a different setting, so this command doesn't apply to them.
If your Mac starts up while the lid stays closed and nothing is plugged in, that isn't this feature. Contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, because the lid sensor or power button may need checking.
Terminal
Open Terminal (Applications › Utilities), paste this line and press Return.
sudo nvram BootPreference=%00To undo:
sudo nvram -d BootPreferenceThis one needs your Mac's admin password. Copy it and run it yourself in Terminal, and only if you're comfortable doing that.
Pro details
Apple's command: stops start-up on lid open and on power connect (needs your admin password). Use %01 for lid only or %02 for power only.
Questions people ask
Why does my MacBook turn on when I open the lid?
Apple silicon MacBooks are designed to start up when you open the lid or connect power. It's normal and doesn't harm your Mac.
Is there a setting to stop my Mac turning on when I open the lid?
Not in System Settings. Apple's Terminal command in the Terminal section of this page turns it off, and the undo command turns it back on.
Can I stop my MacBook starting when I plug in the charger?
Yes. The same command covers both, and the note shows the value that stops only the charger from starting it.
Will my MacBook still wake from sleep when I open the lid?
Yes. The command only stops it starting up after a shut down. Waking from sleep when you open the lid stays the same.
