Turn Limit IP address tracking on or off on your Mac

Last checked: 20 Oct 2026 · macOS 26 & 27 · Source: Apple Support

Quick answer

Open System Settings > Wi-Fi, click Details… next to your network, and turn Limit IP address tracking on or off. It's set separately for each network.

Why it happens

With this on, your Mac hides your IP address from known trackers in Mail and Safari, so they can't use it to follow you from site to site. It's on by default for each network you join. Now and then a website or a work service doesn't like it, and turning it off for that one network fixes the problem. If you use iCloud Private Relay, this switch also turns Private Relay off for that network.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and click Wi-Fi in the sidebar.

  2. Find the network you're connected to and click Details… next to it.

    Wi-Fi›Details…

  3. Turn Limit IP address tracking off if a site or service won't work on this network, or leave it on to keep your address hidden. Click OK.

  4. Reload the page or try the service again. Your choice is remembered for this network only.

Still not fixed?

  1. On a wired connection? Ethernet has the same switch. Open Network, click Ethernet, then Details….

    Network›Ethernet›Details…›Limit IP address tracking

  2. Still broken with the switch off? Turn Private Relay off for a moment to test, then turn it back on.

    Apple Account›iCloud›Private Relay

  3. If the site still fails, quit Safari with Command-Q and open it again, then try another network such as your iPhone's hotspot. That tells you whether the network itself is the problem.

  4. If the switch won't stay the way you set it, or Wi-Fi details won't open, contact Apple Support.

Questions people ask

What does Limit IP address tracking do on a Mac?

It hides your IP address from known trackers in Mail and Safari on that network. Websites still work, but trackers can't use your address to build a picture of you.

Is it safe to turn off Limit IP address tracking?

Yes, on a network you trust. Everything works as normal; trackers in Mail and Safari can just see your IP address again while you're on that network.

Why can't I find Limit IP address tracking?

It's inside each network's details, not on the main Wi-Fi page. Click Details… next to the network you're on, and you'll find it there.
