No Wi-Fi networks show up on your Mac

Quick answer

Open Wi-Fi in System Settings, make sure the switch is on, then turn it off and on again so the Mac scans afresh. If your network is hidden, click Other and type its name.

Why it happens

An empty list usually means Wi-Fi is off or the scan got stuck, and a quick off and on clears it. If only your own network is missing, the Mac may be too far from the router, the router may be restarting, or the network may be set to hide its name.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings and click Wi-Fi in the sidebar.

  2. Check that the Wi-Fi switch at the top is on. Then turn it off, wait about five seconds, and turn it on again. Give the list ten seconds or so to fill in.

  3. Still empty, or your network isn't there? Move closer to the router, or into the same room, and look again.

  4. If your network is hidden, scroll to the bottom of the list and click Other. Type the exact network name, choose the security type and enter the password.

  5. When your network appears, click it and type the password if asked.

Still not fixed?

  1. Restart the router. Unplug the router and modem for 30 seconds, plug them back in and wait two minutes before you look again.

  2. Restart your Mac. A fresh start often clears a Wi-Fi scan that's stuck.

  3. If your phone sees the network but the Mac never does, check the router's settings or ask whoever set it up. Some routers use a channel or a band an older Mac can't see, and switching the router to automatic channels usually fixes it.

  4. Run Wireless Diagnostics. If Wi-Fi shows in your menu bar, hold Option, click its icon, choose Open Wireless Diagnostics… and follow the steps.

  5. If the Wi-Fi switch won't turn on, or no network ever shows up anywhere, even next to the router, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The Wi-Fi hardware may need a repair.

Questions people ask

Why does my MacBook not see any Wi-Fi networks?

Wi-Fi may be off or its scan may be stuck. Turn Wi-Fi off and on in System Settings and wait a few seconds for the list to fill.

Why can my phone see my Wi-Fi but my Mac can't?

The Mac may be further from the router, or the router may use a channel the Mac doesn't pick up. Move closer, restart the router, and check its channel settings.

How do I join a hidden Wi-Fi network on a Mac?

In Wi-Fi settings, click Other at the bottom of the list, type the exact network name, pick the security type and enter the password.
