Find the password of a Wi-Fi network your Mac has saved

Quick answer

Open the Passwords app and unlock it, click Wi-Fi in the sidebar, and select your network. Hold the pointer over the dots next to Password to see it.

Why it happens

Your Mac remembers the password of every Wi-Fi network it joins, so it can reconnect by itself. Wi-Fi settings don't show those passwords, but the Passwords app does. It asks for Touch ID or your Mac login password first, so only you can see them.

How to fix it

  1. Press Command-Space, type Passwords and press Return to open the Passwords app.

  2. Unlock it with Touch ID, or type your Mac login password if your Mac has no Touch ID.

  3. Click Wi-Fi in the sidebar. You'll see the networks your Mac, and your other devices using iCloud Keychain, have saved.

  4. Click your network, then hold the pointer over the dots next to Password. The password shows in plain text.

Still not fixed?

  1. Network not in the list? Your Mac may never have joined it, or it uses a work or school sign-in with a user name instead of one shared password. Ask whoever runs that network.

  2. Have an iPhone that knows the network? Open Settings, tap Wi-Fi, tap the ⓘ next to the network, then tap Password and unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

  3. For your own home Wi-Fi, look for a sticker on the router. Many routers have their network name and password printed there, unless someone has changed it.

  4. If the saved password no longer works, the network's password may have changed. In Wi-Fi settings, click Details… next to the network, choose Forget This Network, then join again with the new password.

  5. If the Passwords app won't unlock even with your correct login password, restart your Mac and try again. If it still won't, contact Apple Support.
