Stop one app from sending notifications on your Mac

Quick answer

Open System Settings > Notifications, click the app and turn off Allow notifications. Its pop-ups stop right away, and every other app keeps working as before.

Why it happens

Apps ask to send notifications the first time you open them, and it's easy to click Allow without thinking. After that, every alert they send appears as a box in the top-right corner. Each app has its own switch, so you can silence one without missing the rest.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings and click Notifications in the sidebar.

  2. Scroll down to the list of apps and click the one that keeps interrupting you.

  3. Turn off Allow notifications. That app can't show pop-ups or play notification sounds until you turn it back on.

  4. Not sure which app sent it? Next time one appears, look at its small icon and name at the top of the box, then find that name in the list.

Still not fixed?

  1. If the pop-ups come from websites, they're sent through your browser. In Safari, choose Safari > Settings, click Websites, then Notifications, and set unwanted sites to Deny.

  2. For another browser, such as Chrome, either turn off that browser in Notifications settings to stop all its alerts, or remove the sites in the browser's own settings.

  3. Want quieter alerts instead of none? Keep Allow notifications on and turn off Play sound for notification for that app.

  4. If the app isn't in the list at all, its pop-ups may be its own windows, not notifications. Look in the app's own settings for an option to turn them off, or quit it when you don't need it.

  5. If an app keeps sending notifications with the switch off, update it or reinstall it. Pop-ups you can't trace to any app you installed are worth a check with Apple Support.
