Turn Apple Intelligence notification summaries on or off
Quick answer
Open System Settings > Notifications, click Summarize notifications and turn the switch off, or on if you want summaries. You can also pick which apps get summarized.
Why it happens
Summarize notifications is part of Apple Intelligence. It turns a pile of alerts from one app, like a busy group chat, into a short summary. Summaries can get details wrong, so some people prefer to see the full messages.
How to fix it
Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings and click Notifications.
Click Summarize notifications near the top of the page.
Notifications›Summarize notifications
Turn the switch off to stop summaries everywhere, or on to start them.
To keep summaries for some apps only, leave the switch on and turn off the apps you don't want summarized in the list below it.
Summarize notifications is in the same place on macOS 26 and 27. Only the Apple Intelligence settings moved: macOS 26 has Apple Intelligence & Siri, while macOS 27 puts them in Siri.
Still not fixed?
Don't see Summarize notifications? It needs Apple Intelligence, which needs a Mac with Apple silicon. On macOS 26, check Apple Intelligence is on in Apple Intelligence & Siri settings; on macOS 27, those controls are in Siri settings.

macOS 27 Golden Gate Siri
Mail has its own summaries in the message list. Turn them off in Mail settings under Viewing, with Summarize Message Previews.
Mail›Settings…›Viewing›Summarize Message Previews
If the setting is missing on a Mac that should have it, install the latest update in General > Software Update and restart.

If summaries keep appearing after you've turned them off, restart your Mac. If they still show, contact Apple Support.
