Stop the pop sound when you change the volume on your Mac
Last checked: 20 Oct 2026 · macOS 26 & 27 · Source: Apple Support
Quick answer
Open System Settings > Sound and turn off Play feedback when volume is changed. The volume keys then change the level silently.
Why it happens
The pop is there so you can hear how loud your Mac will be as you change it. It plays through whatever your sound is going to, so you hear it in headphones too. If it gets on your nerves, one switch turns it off.
How to fix it
Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and click Sound in the sidebar.
Under Sound Effects, turn off Play feedback when volume is changed.
Sound›Sound Effects
Press a volume key to check. The level changes without the pop.
Still not fixed?
Want to hear the pop just once to check the level? Hold Shift while you press a volume key.
Hearing a different click, like when you empty the Trash? That's Play user interface sound effects, in the same section.

If the sound is a crackle from the speakers with every sound, not a short tone, try headphones. If headphones sound clean, the speakers are the likely cause.
If the speakers crackle or pop on everything, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. That's usually a hardware problem that needs a repair.
