See what you copied earlier with Spotlight's clipboard history

Quick answer

Open System Settings > Spotlight and turn on Clipboard Search, called Results from Clipboard on macOS 27. Turn it off to keep copied items out of Spotlight.

Why it happens

Normally your Mac remembers only the last thing you copied, so copying something new replaces it. Spotlight can keep a list of recent copies so you can get older ones back. Because that list can hold private things like addresses or codes, it has its own switch.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings and click Spotlight in the sidebar.

  2. Turn on Clipboard Search on macOS 26, or Results from Clipboard on macOS 27. Turn it off if you'd rather Spotlight didn't keep your copies.

  3. To see your history, press Command-Space to open Spotlight, then press Command-4 to show the clipboard list. Click an item to copy it again, then paste it with Command-V.

The switch is called Clipboard Search on macOS 26 and Results from Clipboard on macOS 27. macOS 27 also adds a Clear Clipboard History button in the same place.

Still not fixed?

  1. Want to wipe the list? On macOS 27, click Clear Clipboard History in Spotlight settings. On macOS 26, turn off Clipboard Search to keep copied items out of Spotlight.

  2. History starts from when you switch it on, so things you copied before that won't be in the list.

  3. If the switch isn't there, update your Mac in Software Update. The clipboard history arrived with macOS 26.

  4. If the history stays empty with the switch on, turn it off and on again, then restart your Mac. If it still never fills, contact Apple Support.
