Update your Mac's App Store apps

Why it happens

Apps you got from the App Store, like Pages, Keynote or Xcode, get their updates there, not from Software Update. Unless automatic updates are on, they wait for you to install them. Safari and the apps that come with macOS update with macOS instead.

How to fix it

1. Open the App Store from the Dock or the Applications folder.

2. Click Updates in the sidebar, then click Update All. To update a single app, click Update next to that one instead.

3. If the list looks out of date, press Command-R to check again.

4. Wait for the updates to finish. Save your work first, because an app that's open may need to quit.

Still not fixed?

1. Let your Mac do this by itself. In the App Store, choose App Store > Settings… and turn on Automatic Updates.

2. Update stuck? Check there's free space in General > Storage, then quit the App Store with Command-Q and open it again.

3. An update that won't install may belong to an app bought with another Apple Account. Sign in with that account, or delete the app and get it again with yours.

4. Looking for a Safari update? It comes with macOS, in General > Software Update.

5. Apps from outside the App Store update themselves, usually through a Check for Updates item in the app's own menu.

6. If an App Store update still won't install after a restart, contact Apple Support.
