Change your Mac's pointer colour so it's easier to see

Quick answer

Open Accessibility in System Settings, click Display, and pick new colours with Pointer outline color and Pointer fill color. Reset Colors puts back the usual black and white.

Why it happens

The standard pointer is black with a thin white edge. On some pictures, documents and dark windows it blends in, and it's easy to lose. Choosing your own fill and outline colours makes it stand out everywhere.

How to fix it

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, then Display.

  2. Scroll down to the Pointer section. Click the Pointer fill color swatch and pick a colour for the inside of the arrow.

  3. Click Pointer outline color and pick a colour for the edge. A strong contrast works best, like a dark fill with a bright outline.

  4. Move the pointer over a few different windows to check you can see it easily. To go back to the standard look, click Reset Colors.

Still not fixed?

  1. Still hard to see? Drag Pointer size in the same section to make it bigger.

  2. Turn on Shake mouse pointer to locate. When you lose the pointer, wiggle the mouse or your finger on the trackpad and it grows for a moment.

  3. Some apps draw their own pointer, like a text cursor or a crosshair, and those may keep their usual colours. That's normal.

  4. If the colours reset by themselves after a restart, or the pointer flickers or vanishes, contact Apple Support.
