Turn a Safari extension or ad blocker back on

Quick answer

In Safari, choose Safari > Settings…, click Extensions and tick the box next to the extension. Untick any extension you don't recognise.

Why it happens

Safari only runs extensions that are ticked in its settings, and each one comes inside an app you installed. If that app was removed or updated, or you started using a new Safari profile, the extension can end up off. Some extensions also need your permission for each website before they do anything.

How to fix it

  1. Open Safari, then choose Safari > Settings… from the menu bar, or press Command-comma.

  2. Click Extensions at the top of the window and tick the box next to the extension you want.

    Safari›Settings…›Extensions

  3. While you're there, untick anything you don't remember installing. Click an extension's name to see what it can read and change.

  4. Go back to the page and reload it with Command-R. If the extension's icon appears next to the address bar, click it to see whether it needs permission for this site, and allow it if you trust it.

Still not fixed?

  1. If the extension isn't in the list, the app it came with may have been deleted. Reinstall that app from the App Store or the developer's site and open it once.

  2. Update the app that holds the extension. Old versions can stop working after a Safari update.

  3. If you use Safari profiles, each profile has its own extensions. Check that the extension is turned on for the profile you're browsing in.

  4. In Private Browsing windows, extensions may stay off until you allow them. Look for an option to allow the extension in Private Browsing on its Extensions settings.

  5. If a site tells you to turn off your ad blocker, you can switch blockers off for that site only. Choose Safari > Settings…, click Websites, then Content Blockers, and set that site to Off.

  6. If one extension still won't work, contact its developer. If no extension works at all, even a freshly installed one, contact Apple Support.
