Stop balloons, hearts and fireworks popping up on video calls

Quick answer
While your camera is on, click the Video icon in the menu bar and click Reactions to turn it off. Hand gestures then stop setting off effects.
Why it happens
Reactions is a macOS video effect that watches for hand gestures. A thumbs up, a peace sign or heart hands can set off balloons, hearts, confetti or fireworks, even when you're only waving or explaining something. It's switched on in the Video menu, so that's where you turn it off.
How to fix it
Join or start your call, or open your video app's camera preview, so the camera is on.
Click the Video icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen. It only shows while the camera is in use. Click Reactions so it's no longer highlighted.

Try a thumbs up in front of the camera. Nothing should pop up now.
Still not fixed?
If effects come back in a different app, turn Reactions off there too. Open that app, start the camera and repeat the same step from the Video icon.
If something still pops up, quit the video app with Command-Q, open it again, start the camera and check Reactions is still off in the Video menu.
Other effects, such as Portrait or Studio Light, sit in the same Video menu and don't cause the pop-ups. Leave them as you like.
If Reactions won't stay off, update your Mac in General > Software Update.

Questions people ask
How do I stop fireworks on FaceTime on a Mac?
With the camera on, click the Video icon in the menu bar and click Reactions to turn it off. Two thumbs up won't set off fireworks after that.
Why do hearts appear on my face during video calls?
Heart hands are a Reactions gesture. Turn Reactions off in the Video menu in the menu bar while the camera is on.
Can other people see the balloons on my video call?
Yes. Reactions are added to your camera picture, so everyone on the call sees them.
