Find your saved passwords on your Mac

Quick answer

Open the Passwords app: press Command-Space, type Passwords and press Return. Unlock it with Touch ID or your Mac login password, then type the website or app name in the search box.

Why it happens

When Safari or an app offers to save a password, your Mac stores it in your keychain, and the Passwords app is the place to see it. Passkeys, verification codes and Wi-Fi passwords live there too. A few older items, such as some app and server passwords, only show up in Keychain Access.

How to fix it

  1. Press Command-Space to open Spotlight, type Passwords and press Return.

  2. Unlock the app with Touch ID or the password you use to log in to your Mac. It locks again by itself after a while.

  3. Type the site or app name in the search box at the top. Click a result to see the user name and password, and to copy them.

  4. Use the sidebar to browse groups such as Passkeys, Wi-Fi and Deleted. Deleted holds passwords you removed recently, in case you need one back.

  5. Can't find an older password? Press Command-Space, type Keychain Access and open it. Search there for the item's name.

Still not fixed?

  1. If passwords from your iPhone or iPad are missing, make sure this Mac syncs them with iCloud. Open your Apple Account in System Settings, then iCloud, then Passwords, and turn on Sync this Mac. Use the same Apple Account on both.

  2. Saved a password in another browser? It's kept in that browser's own settings, not in Passwords, unless you imported it.

  3. If Safari or apps stop offering your saved passwords, turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys.

  4. If Passwords won't accept your Mac login password, make sure you're typing the password for the account you're logged in to, with Caps Lock off.

  5. If saved passwords seem to have vanished from every device, contact Apple Support. They can help you check your iCloud Keychain and Apple Account.
