Find your Mac's IP address and your router's address

Quick answer

Open System Settings > Wi-Fi, click Details… next to your network, then TCP/IP. Your Mac's address is next to IP address, and your router's is next to Router.

Why it happens

Your router gives every device at home its own local IP address, often starting with 192.168 or 10. That's the address shown in your Mac's settings, and it's what you need for things like printers or sharing. Websites see a different public address that belongs to your router, which your Mac's settings don't show.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings and click Wi-Fi. Click Details… next to the network you're connected to.

  2. Click TCP/IP. Your Mac's address is next to IP address, and your router's address is next to Router.

  3. Using a cable? Open Network, click Ethernet, then Details… and TCP/IP.

    Network›Ethernet›Details…›TCP/IP

  4. Quick way: hold Option and click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar. Your IP address and router appear under your network's name.

Still not fixed?

  1. Address starts with 169.254? Your Mac didn't get a proper address from the router. Click Renew DHCP Lease in the same TCP/IP section.

  2. No address shown at all? Make sure you're connected, then turn Wi-Fi off and on again.

  3. Need an address that never changes, for a printer or a game? Set Configure IPv4 to Manually in the same place and type an address your router allows.

  4. Need your public address? Look in your router's settings, or search the web for what is my IP.

  5. If your Mac never gets a proper address on any network after a restart, contact Apple Support. If only your home network fails, restart the router and contact your internet provider.
