Fix the wrong location websites see with Private Relay

Last checked: 20 Oct 2026 · macOS 26 & 27 · Source: Apple Support

Quick answer

Open System Settings, click your name, then iCloud, then Private Relay, and set IP Address Location to Maintain general location. Websites then see an address in your general area instead of just your country.

Why it happens

Private Relay hides your real IP address in Safari by sending your browsing through two separate relays. The address websites see can either stay in your general area or only match your country and time zone. With the country setting, shops, weather and maps sites may guess a city far from where you are.

How to fix it

  1. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and click your name at the top of the sidebar.

  2. Click iCloud, then Private Relay.

  3. Set IP Address Location to Maintain general location, then click Done.

  4. Reload the page in Safari. A site that stored your old location may need a few minutes, or a sign-out and sign-in, before it catches up.

Still not fixed?

  1. Wrong on one network only, like at work? You can turn Private Relay off for just that network. Open Wi-Fi, click Details… next to the network and turn off Limit IP address tracking.

  2. When a site asks to use your location, let it. It then uses your Mac's real location instead of guessing from the address. Safari needs to be allowed in Location Services for that.

  3. Turn Private Relay off for a moment and reload the page. If the location is still wrong without it, the site's own location data is out of date, and only that site can correct it.

  4. If Private Relay keeps putting you in another country even on Maintain general location, contact Apple Support. They can check your iCloud+ plan and the relay service with you.

Questions people ask

Why does Private Relay put me in a different city?

Your browsing goes out through a relay with an address of its own. If IP Address Location is set to Use country and time zone, that address can be anywhere in your country. Maintain general location keeps it nearer to you.

Does Private Relay change my location in every app?

No. It mainly covers Safari. Other web browsers and most apps use your normal connection, so they see your usual location.

Do I need to pay for Private Relay?

Yes. It's part of iCloud+, which comes with any paid iCloud storage plan.
